Title: Balcony from Doukustu Monogatari
Post by: Hoshi on February 20, 2007, 01:56:29 AM
This was made from the PC game Doukutsu Monogatari/Cave Story.  I tried to keep the stage as accurate as possible to the original game even down to the point where you get lost in the clouds to some degree. README enclosed.

Post by: Caddie on February 21, 2007, 11:22:35 PM
I submitted my entry today, but I'm also gonna post it here in case there is some problem with the e-mail. The file is uploaded on my site's server, but not released on the actual site yet(May wait a bit to do so). And I won't be making any changes to it, so don't worry about that.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Caddie

From Another World(Out of this World), the stage is the first walking screen. Converted from the Win XP "Collector's Edition" version of this game. BGM is from the Sega Cd version of the game.

There are two versions of the stage included in the rar file. I want the "ootw.def" version to be judged. The other one is only there because some people complained about the way the screen scrolls vertically, which I put in there to emulate how the screen changes in the actual game when you go to a new screen.

And now, the download.

May you please move that post over to the "entries" topic that I was unaware was here? Sorry about that.

Done, and don't worry about it.

I'll send the stage per e-mail if this gives too much trouble.

Name: Butter Building
Version: 1.1
Origin: Kirby's Adventure
Author: GaryCXJk

Anyone remember that very cool level (for its time) in Kirby's Adventure? The one where Nintendo used a certain technique to render "3D" in a NES game? Of course, they cheated by using animated tiles, but who cares? It was cool back then.

Butter Building was the third world in Kirby's Adventure, and the first occurance of the rotating tower was in stage two of that world.

This stage has been upsized to fit most of the fighting game characters, although they won't actually fit well. But it's the thought that counts, and that stage was one of the cooler stages of Kirby's Adventure.

Original

MUGEN
(http://area91.multiverseworks.com/stages/screenshots/kabutterbuilding_0001.png)

[Download] (http://area91.multiverseworks.com/stages/kabutterbuilding.zip) [ADX Download] (http://area91.multiverseworks.com/stages/kabutterbuilding_adx.zip)

Particularities
To make the tower rotate, only four backgrounds were used.

The sprites of both Kirby and King Dedede were not originally from the Kirby's Adventure
game, but edited from the GBA remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, to resemble the old
NES game.

The sphere which can occasionally be seen in the background is Nightmare, in particular
the intro version. In the game itself the shading will somewhat resemble the colour
scheme of the background at that time.

The Bronto Burt was scripted in a way that it not only "circles" around the tower, but
it also rotates with the tower's movement. This was also the only animated character
which I have personally screen captured from the game.

The three Shotzo use a technique someone else might already have developed. They rotate
around the tower in different speeds. Actually, the one in the center does not change
speed because it falls out of the screen when it's supposed to do that. The other two
also change their direction.

Di Gi Jared, I became aware of your contest, through my daily browse of the MFG forum.  The stage (itself) was already shipped to the email address you specified.  Anyhow, here's my entry:

Welcome to Monkey World (from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island)

This background could very well be considered one of my better creations, with the possible exception of several others.  It's not apparent from the screenshot, but you'll notice I sacrificed practicality (in terms of individual element size), for a much more accurate, visually appealing feel.  Plus, the screenshots are not exact replicas, as I utilized sprites of my choosing.

As per your request, I will not update this stage any further (until the contest has officially ended).  I will, however, upload this version to my own website (but likely not for a couple days, yet).

Thanks everyone for your entries.  They`re looking really good!

Mature, you can update the file as much as you need until the deadline (March 11th).  Just make sure the version you have uploaded that time is the one that we have to judge.

Alright, here's my official entry: the Blue Lake Woods stage from the old Sega Genesis game, Kid Chameleon. It's a complete and total overhaul of my older Blue Lake Woods stage; the lake has been completely re-ripped and re-sequenced, and is 100% frame and timing accurate. Also, the foreground layers have undergone some heavy changes as well. This time around, I emphasized on aesthetics (with accuracy taking a close second); for example, you can see I tweaked around the background mountains, trees and lake to make more of the background visible in MUGEN without having to super-jump (though the stage does support super-jumps to a degree). However, every animation that's in the stage is AFAIK 100% accurate to the actual game, right down to the cycle timings.

Hopefully this should be a welcome step up from that older 'stage' of mine.

Actual Game (note that the level shown is different)

Jared, my entry has been re-shipped, on account of the update I made to it (today).  Feel free to scrap the first zip archive.

You see that chimp in both screenshots?  Well, with a little patience, I've managed to give him an animation (improved upon, from the last release), I'm sure you'll find delightful.  There's no doubt...this stage makes me proud.

Before I forget, this is the page to which the background will be uploaded (when the time comes):

Hey everyone,

I just uploaded an updated version of my stage, with properly cropped sprites and some additional cosmetic work. I also updated the screenshot of the mugen stage to reflect the changes (no, the cabin didn't disappear, it was just moved to the left.) For your convenience you can download the update at the link below.

I'm not much on words these days so I'll cut it direct. Stage is from the beat-em-up style Guilty Gear Judgment game for the PSP. Royal pain to rip. Sky was probably the biggest pain and even now I'm not fully satisfied with it, but I don't think at this time I can do much more with it. In the end though it's complete, and hope you like the finished results.

Here's my stage entry: Brinstar from Super Metroid for SNES. This versions differs from the one on my website in that it's more superjump-friendly (added a floortension value).

Alrighty, here's my entry, and my first Mugen release ever.

Gradius III - Crystal Labyrinth
(http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/8350/screenshotyg3.png)
The floor was made from a photo of a glass cube. The original game had scrolling stars in the background of all the levels, but they were kind of sparse and unimpressive-looking, so I made my own. Eveything else is sprites right from the game, arranged into a fairly accurate, functioning facsimile of the original stage that scrolls by as you fight.

Two songs are included, the original level's tune, and a fan-made SNES arrangement I found on a Japanese website (this level was absent from the SNES port, but this version of the song gives you an idea of what it might have sounded like if they had included it).

I've e-mailed it to SDM, so hopefully it'll be hosted soon.  :P

Here's my rendition of the first level of Biomenace.
The colors are a bit darker than the original game, but I noticed that the DOSBox screenshots all came out like that so whatever.

Title: Re: STAGE WARS Entries

My entry comes from Comix Zone for the Mega Drive/Genesis:

I tried something different with this stage. In the original game, Sketch (the protagonist)
could jump from one square of the comic book to another to progress in the game. However, since
that would require interaction between chars and stages, which Mugen doesn't support (outside
full-games), I decided to have the background moving instead, making it scroll through six
different sections.
Each row of the comic book consists of some squares that summarize the stage they came from,
so the first row is of stage 1-1, the second of stage 1-2 and so on, all the way to stage 3-2.

Every time the background is about to change, an arrow appears pointing to where the chars
are going, kind of like the original game. This actually plays an important role as it allows a
human player to be aware of that change, so it doesn't surprise him.

Also added a short stage intro taken from the main menu of the game.

About the stage's size, it should be wide enough (same width as the original, which is just a
bit wider than Capcom stages), but due to the limited height of each row, it can get a little
tight for average-sized chars. Smaller chars (pocket, platformers, etc), however, have plenty
of room.

The BGM comes from the first stage of the game, just because I consider it more of a main
theme than the main theme itself, and is a lot more memorable.

Know Issue:
- This stage needs to use a lot of foreground elements, so lifebars that are placed on layer 0
may not be displayed properly (I'll add an extra def with less FG sprites in the future, after the contest).

The only difference between the version on the site and the one I mailed is that the latter includes the screenshot and readme (which I just posted anyway). Also, I won't be updating the stage until the contest is over, to make it easier for everyone (myself inlcluded).

Jared, your recent post about "going the extra mile" with the readme had sparked some unexpected interest, so once again (& for the final time), my entry has been sent to your gmail address.  The background hasn't changed; just the text file that accompanies it.

BTW, this is some impressive body of work!

Description

Original stage made with various image editing softwares. The design is kind of simple but relaxing at the same time. Also the stage doesn't resets during rounds just because of a BG Animation that takes place after a while, making the stage a bit different for a while. It's Super Jump compatible. Has some flaws but it will be worked soon enough. :P

Oh yeah, and the deadline for all the judges to turn in their results is the 18th.  If all the judges finish all their voting before then, however, we will post the results at that time.  Please look forward to it!
